A Million Little... whatever

So I just finished A Million Little Pieces for Book Club, and despite all of the controversey, I really enjoyed it. I actually feel sorry for James Frey, and think that while, yeah, he clearly exaggerated a lot, he was probably just a puppet for his publishers and got sucked into this media frenzy that is incredibly indicative of how our society - even Oprah who usually seems above this stuff - will just jump on any idea the media blows out of proportion and beat it until it's a dead horse.

Anyway, that being said, I thought this picture was hysterical.

I haven't read the book. Prison life isn't where my head is now. I agree with your thoughts on James Frey. He is an easy target for those with poor aim. If one were to go in any publisher's catalogue of non-fiction and fact check, they would find a lot of fiction.(That is, if they could ask a lot of questions of the dead,'cause that is when the juicy stuff gets written, when the subject is no longer around.) While this doesn't make it proper to write fiction in a non-fiction book, it does happen. This grey area is not frequently policed.
Ms. Winfrey's take-Frey-to-the-woodshed-techinique was inappropriate. It reminds me of Bush frequently invoking the sermon on the mount when he's cornered--(why do you point out the cinder in my eye when you have a log in your own?)If Ms. Winfrey is going to be the arbitrator of truth, then she should pick more meaningful targets, such as Gore, Bush, Clinton--all have been on her show and been dished nothing but soft-serve vanilla yogurt.

What's funny is that a big stink was made about the supposed prison time he served and the book doesn't even go into it! It just says that he is sentenced and eventually will serve 80 days in prison, but none of the book actually takes place while he's there. Ridiculous to have made such a big deal.

I personally would love to see Oprah take Tom Cruise to task for being such a freak show. He's way more unstable and a much bigger liar than James Frey!

Great article in the latest rolling stone about scientology. Cruise is a freakshow. And I don't like oprah anyway.
